“But For”

Americans’ thoughts and ability to reason have been depleting.
Can’t conclude on politicians’ intent.
Not allowed to make reasonable judgments.
Words can’t incite violence.
Actions need not show competence.
Some even claim that politicians’ words don’t inflame.
And they can say as they may
Because they are protected by the First Amendment.
They can attack their opponents with vengeance.
Manipulate for dilution of the Constitution,
Pledge of Allegiance and Declaration of Independence.
They can change the intended meanings.
Put their own spin and interpretations.
Make up new terms like alternate facts.
Use their position to bully and threaten, never to retract.
All that of course is for them and theirs but not for the opposition.
With the upper hand and advantage afforded mostly to Republicans.
Expectations and demands, severely watered down.
America’s creation of amoral politicians.

We’re to believe that a few comments here and there.
From many different Democrats
Will have the same devastating effect
As Trump’s meticulous targeting and rhetoric.
Tapping into the hate and anger already lingering.
Promoting lies and falsehoods.
Riling up his supporters to storm the Capitol.
That end did not just come from them.
It came from Trump, their President.
Democrats’ words did not lead to incitement.
Their supporters aren’t the ones who are violent.
Any how it’s taken, Democrats didn’t muster the insurgents.
Even when Republicans tried to put the blame to Antifa
MAGA army members cried foul.
As they were proud of their accomplishments.
Republicans not wanting to hold Trump accountable through impeachment.
Their claim – it can cause more division and incite more violence.
Where were they to prevent such, before the insurrection?
Then there was no care when the barrel pointed mostly to the opposition.
Republicans were ready to acquit.
Not because Trump was innocent.
But out of fear or loyalty.
They stood by him, despite his hand in the insurgency.
They want for wrong deeds to be let go.
As if the terrorists are the ones who should run the show.
Some Republicans were not as horrified by Trump’s call to charge.
But by his delay and failure to call off as the violent marched.
Slim escape from the mob.
No longer a safe place for lawmakers to do their job.

America’s political has become even more dysfunctional.
With one Party being inculpable.
One side getting green lights.
Not so for those across the aisle.
Leaders who give them and theirs a pass.
While they place the opposition under the magnifying glass.
Symbolizing America’s divide among her people.
One side still wanting a Trump sequel.
If we’re not on the same page,
With standards for how all politicians should behave.
And someone like Trump taking full advantage.
Restricting one side while giving free rein to the other.
The one with the leeway must feel empowered.
If we’re not on the same page,
Even when it comes to the meaning and effects of words.
How can we communicate and be understood?
But that’s how it is when those on the Right go with
What doesn’t make sense.
When their wishful thinking and reality don’t intersect.
And when they don’t get what they want
There is so much disappointment
That becomes a grievance for them.
Coupled with them feeling unappreciated.
They let their rage overtake.
On full display January 6th 2021.
But for Trump – the insurgency would not have happened.
He stirred the pot and did nothing to stop.
He told lies that so many got behind.
But for Republicans –
Trump would not have had the upper hand.
To bring such demands with verbal commands.
But for voters – who turn a blind eye.
Trump and his minions would not feel justified.
It never would have gotten this far.
If so many hadn’t lowered the bar.
January 6th didn’t happen in a vacuum.
What role did you assume?
Is there something you did to contribute?
