Life Isn’t Always Fair, But We Can Be!

My father often told of a man’s complaint.
A situation that was causing the man a lot of strain.
His 18-year-old was aiming for higher education,
Which they could not afford, not even the tuition.
My father’s take – that’s the bed the man made.
He could have made better decisions
to have his child’s dream come to fruition.
He had 18 years of preparation!
So when we can, we should prepare.
Not just wait until we get there –
That was one lesson to be learned.
But as I grew older, there was another to discern.
One which puts the blame mostly to the person.

For that case, when you’re not doing well,
It’s because of your own wrong-doing or limitation.
Not due to limits within your situation.
But before we criticize, we should realize –
All are not born to the same circumstances.
And we do not all receive equal chances.
No, life isn’t fair – but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to be.
It’s more reason for us to share and show that we care
to those who have less, get worse or experience adverse.

Some think that the poor are paying for their sins.
God is punishing them for disobeying Him.
But isn’t that the predicament that we are all in?
And it’s not only the poor who at times fail to achieve.
Well-to-do and rich are known to file for bankruptcy!

Some perceive that poor people cheat –
Living off welfare – Lazy.
While on the other side some manipulate the system.
They even engage in tax evasion.
But in their mind – that hide – they justify.
Sometimes we do our best as we live.
And life gives us a negative.
Some then live paycheck to paycheck.
Any hiccup becomes a huge set-back.

If you are born into wealth,
You have access to education and health.
This can open even more doors.
No such leg-up for those born poor.
And when the wealthy fall
They often have strings they can pull.
It’s easier to achieve more
When you have a variety of tools.

Some people who have, want to control who gets.
Because if everyone has an equal chance
They’re afraid they will end up with less.
But when you are given – you should give.
If you are blessed – contribute to another’s success.
Don’t let fear make you selfish.
There is much to cherish when you are doing the helping.
And when you have – don’t take it for granted.
Your life can easily shift.
You never know when the tables may turn.
And then it’s YOU that’s needing a lift.
