A Glimpse of Small Government

Republican ideology has been for less government and to privatize.
But when profit is the aim of the game returns and services are often compromised.
If this was a successful strategy.
We would have a more sustainable economy
And a dent to eliminate poverty.
There would be more equality and more economic stability in our communities.

Free Trade and Free Market tend to help those who already have a ticket.
It doesn’t help the have-nots get out of the hole they’re in.
And Wall Street will help if you have money to invest.
Or if you have a 401K toward your retirement.
But on a regular basis, for the man on the street
Wall Street is not what they need.

The ideology from Democrats, fundamentally
Has been to level off the playing field a bit.
Because life isn’t fair.
And there will be gaps here and there.
Unlike what Republicans think
It’s not to hand money to the poor.
It’s to have fairer contributions from those who make more.
And to even out the distribution of benefits
That we are all vying for.
Under Republicans, profits are funneled to the top two percent.
When the foundation of the economy
Lies with what the poor and middle class are able to spend.
So why would we think it’s a viable solution?
We’re basing our decisions on faulty reasoning.
If we stack Jenga blocks to the top.
Common sense will tell us that the tower won’t stand up.

If America wanted to resolve poverty –
This powerful and rich country.
It certainly should be doing better
Especially if the answer is to come from boosting the private sector.
But when big corporations meet success
They don’t give their excess to those who make less.
It’s to investors, Administrators and CEOs
That the profits go.
So they also funnel their money upward.
And when these companies are in for a drop
Taxpayers are there for their bail-out.
Because if they go under
It will be worse for the country and the consumers.
We’ve seen this happen again and again.
Even when consumers and citizens are struggling.
Yet we keep going back to the same
Isn’t that the definition of insane?

If Government is perceived as the enemy.
And the regulations they put in are no longer necessary.
Have the chips fall where they may.
Then who will be there to coordinate
When there is a fail or a fall?
Should we still go with winner takes all?

Currently, isn’t that how it is?
As citizens don’t see a stimulus bill.
Small businesses go down.
There has been a substantial loss of jobs.
Where is the private sector bail-out?
They were given tax cuts earlier in the year.
And with the pandemic, many have been speared.
Isn’t this a good time for them to share?
With the virus they haven’t all suffered a loss.
Contrary, some have soared.

There is no incentive for these corporations to change.
Republicans and Trump gave them an even bigger stage.
If you don’t want Government to rule over you.
Well Republicans and Trump have made your wish come true.
Without regulations and governing,
Special interests and corporations have free rein.
If these Companies are given the power by our leaders,
Who will be the citizen’s and consumer’s keepers?
